Tina Martin

Tina Martin started her dance training with the School of Richmond Ballet. During summers she attended the Boston Ballet and the North Carolina School of the Arts. Her professional dance career began as an apprentice at the Richmond Ballet. By her second year, she was elevated to solo and principle roles within the company. The repertoire included such works as Serenade, Who Cares?, Apollo, The Nutcracker, Giselle, Coppelia, and Agnes DeMille’s Rodeo. Her time at Richmond Ballet permitted her the opportunity to work with such icons of the dance world as Fredrick Franklin, Judy Fugate, and Suki Shore.

In 1992 Martin was hired by Ballet Florida and began her 17 years of dance performances in South Florida. During this time she performed in over 100 ballets. This included such highlighted roles as: Juliet in Romeo and Juliet, Aurora in Sleeping Beauty, Titania in Mid-Summer Nights Dream, Anne in Anne Frank, Marguerite in Lady of the Camellias and the Sacrifice in The Rite of Spring. She also danced the principle roles in Firebird, StepText, Allegro, Ash, Tchaikovsky Pas de deux, Smile with my Heart, Lambarena, Elemental Brubeck, to name a few.

During these years Martin had the privilege of personally working with
choreographers such as Lar Lubovitch, Val Canaporoli, Mauricio Wainrot, Trey McIntyre and Sean Lavery. Companies including Tulsa Ballet and Ballet West hired her to perform as a guest artist and for five years she performed for the Virginia School of the Arts Gala.

On a personal note, Ms. Martin married in 2002 to Robert Norvell whom she met during Ballet Florida’s StepAhead program. In 2004 they had their son, Aidan and in 2012 their daughter, Cora.

In 2007, Mauricio Wainrot selected Martin to perform his piece The Rite of Spring in Moscow at the prestigious Bolshoi Theatre for the Benois de la dance. Then in 2008, she was invited to perform in Caracas, Venezuela for the Viva Nebrada Gala. She was also nominated for the Palm Beach County Cultural Council Muse Award in 2009.

While a principal dancer at Ballet Florida Martin was selected to be a teacher in the trainee program. She also taught at the company’s academy and acted as rehearsal assistant. In the 2009 – 2010 school year, Ms. Martin taught ballet at U. B. Kinsey Elementary School of the Arts. Ms. Martin passes the diversity, strength & knowledge of dance she has experienced to all of her students.
